The Detroit Red Wings signed veteran left wing James van Riemsdyk to a one-year contract worth $1 million Tuesday during the first day of free agency. Van Riemsdyk, 36, tallied 16 goals and 20 assists in 71 games with Columbus last season. He projects to play on their second or third line.

The Red Wings didn't land any big names, but they improved their depth during the start of unrestricted free agency.

The former Boston Bruins forward signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings worth $1 million with bonuses added in, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported. Van Riemsdyk spent the 2024-25 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and scored 16 goals with 20 assists in 71 games.
