An outspoken Trump critic in his first term, Bowser tried cooperation in his second. But that didn't stop the president from taking over the city's police department and sending in National Guard troops.

Democratic Washington, D. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has left the district for Martha’s Vineyard as President Donald Trump deploys the National Guard to restore law and order in the nation’s capital, Scripps News reported.

This time around, Bowser took a different tact from the start. She flew to Florida to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago after he won the election and has worked to avoid conflict and downplay points of contention, including tearing up the “Black Lives Matter” letters after he returned to Washington in response to pressure from Republicans in Congress.
