Millions of Americans from the Plains to the East Coast faced the threat of blizzards, heavy snow, treacherous ice and freezing rain through Monday, the National Weather Service said on Saturday. Governors in Kentucky and Virginia declared states of emergency ahead of the winter storm.

This weekend's storm is expected to impact 62 million Americans through Monday. Heavy snow, ice, rain and severe thunderstorms are being unleashed from the Plains to the East Coast.

Carter’s ride through Plains marks the beginning of one last journey, a trip that will mirror the path of his storied life.

McPherson recalled visiting Plains with his aunt and uncle during Carter’s presidential campaign and meeting Carter’s brother, Billy, at his service station. He also recalled meeting Carter at Mom’s Kitchen in Preston, about 10 miles west of Plains, and on a flight back to Atlanta from Billings, Montana.

Jimmy Carter lived in the Georgia governor's mansion and the White House, but his real home was in the tiny town of Plains. It is in this town in the southwestern part of the Peach State that the president will be laid to rest after a journey back to Atlanta and Washington.
