The baby elephant sensation Tula-Tu made her public debut on Friday when she joined the rest of the elephant herd at the Oregon Zoo, including being with her mother, Rose-Tu.

Timber and Thorn, as the babies were named, were found separately alone in Alaska and, since they were too young to survive by themselves, they were rescued and taken to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. Then, they were brought to Portland. The Oregon Zoo has had a good number of lion cubs over the years. But look at these cute pals, born in 2014.

Oregon Zoo visitors can visit the newest baby elephant at Forest Hall, the indoor portion of the zoo’s elephant habitat.

The Oregon Zoo has determined that the newest member of its Asian elephant herd is indeed a girl, and given her a name: Tula-Tu. Oregon Zoo director Heidi Rahn made the announcement live on NBC’s Today show this morning. Tula means “balance” in Sanskrit, Rahn said.

The indoor elephant habitat will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with a limited capacity of 150 people and viewing windows of 20 minutes each. Zoo staff may also decide to close Forest Hall at times when Rose-Tu and her calf need a bit of alone time.

The Oregon Zoo is set to welcome visitors to meet its newest resident, Tula-Tu, a 2-week-old Asian elephant calf.

An atmospheric river is expected to affect western portions of Washington and Oregon beginning Saturday and continuing into Tuesday. This will bring the potential for urban and river flooding impacts.
