Sophgo scores a place on Entity List, Indian nuclear boffins taken off Chinese chip designer Sophgo, a suspected supplier of AI silicon to Huawei, has been added to the USA’s “Entity List” of orgs felt to represent a national security risk and therefore prohibited from working with American companies unless a license is issued to allow such dealings.

The Biden administration added more than two dozen Chinese entities to a U.S. restricted trade list on Wednesday, including Zhipu AI, a developer of large language models, and Sophgo, a company whose TSMC-made chip was illegally incorporated into a Huawei artificial intelligence processor.

Chinese companies on the US blacklist will find it more difficult to trade with US companies. Inclusion on the list is "clearly a mistake", according to Tencent.

The moves are part of the Biden administration’s last-gasp efforts to clamp down on China’s harnessing of AI for its military and tech sector.
