Firefighters made progress on the more than 10,000-acre Hughes Fire Friday, which sent thousands fleeing after sparking near the Los Angeles County community of Castaic a day earlier.

Gibbel Fire initially started 4:40 p.m. Jan. 23 in Riverside County. Since its discovery seven hours ago, it has burned 20 acres, an increase of five acres since the last update. At this time, details about the containment of the fire are unknown.

The two largest fires, the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire near Pasadena, remain active. One of the latest, the Hughes Fire in the Castaic area, has prompted evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people.

Toxic smoke and dangerous particulate pollution are spreading far beyond the flames, leaving air quality at unhealthy levels in multiple counties.
