The blaze is burning in a desolate area of San Luis Obispo County, but its smoke has spread to two nearby counties.

The Madre Fire ignited Wednesday afternoon in San Luis Obispo County and has since grown to more than 35,500 acres, according to Cal Fire.

The Madre Fire was reported shortly after noon Wednesday, July 2, along Highway 166 about 25 miles east of Santa Maria.
