Investigators have already recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder of the American Airlines plane that collided with an Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport.

In the wake of the midair collision that occurred in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, multiple lawmakers and other prominent figures have made statements on the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration in a statement said American Airlines Flight 5342, departing from Wichita, Kansas to Washington, collided around 9 p.m. midair while approaching the runway with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter.

Air crash investigations can take months, and federal investigators told reporters they would not speculate on what caused the collision between the Army helicopter and a jetliner.

Last year, the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act authorized 10 additional daily flights to DCA’s schedule, all of which are outside the perimeter. This decision was made “over the strong opposition of the Airports Authority,” DCA’s website says. Congress also added 54 total slots spread across 2012, 2003 and 2000.

The crash, resulting in 67 lives lost, is the deadliest aviation incident in the United States since 2001. It ends a yearslong accident-free run for the country’s commercial flight industry.
