Vatican officials have said Pope Francis has developed pneumonia in both lungs, further complicating his recovery. The 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized Friday after a weeklong bout of bronchitis worsened.
The pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 after experiencing difficulty breathing for several days and subsequently had pneumonia diagnosed in both lungs.
The 88-year-old pontiff is in good spirits and is grateful for the prayers for his recovery, the Vatican said.
The Vatican said that the pontiff had pneumonia in both lungs and that he “continued to present a complex picture.”
