Maharashtra government has tasked the committee to explore the viability of phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles, and replacing them with CNG and electric vehicles in the region.

Mumbai: In a significant move to tackle the rising pollution levels, the Maharashtra government has initiated preparations to impose a ban on diesel and petrol vehicles within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

As per the Maharashtra transport department's provisional data, around 1.20 crore vehicles are registered at nine Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) till December 2024.

The committee, headed by retired IAS officer Sudhir Kumar Shrivastava, will study and submit a report with its recommendations within three months, reported PTI, citing a government resolution dated January 22.
