Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest.

In May, France’s far-right party led by Marine Le Pen split from the AfD in its European Parliament coalition after the German party’s top candidate, Maximilian Krah, said that a person was “not automatically a criminal” just because they had been a member of the SS, Adolph Hitler’s paramilitary organization.

In the piece, Musk justified his support for AfD, calling it “Germany’s last spark of hope.” “Portraying AfD as far-right is blatantly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a partner from Sri Lanka!

In a guest column for the German newspaper Die Welt, Elon Musk has called on Germany to vote for the anti-immigration party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), calling it “the last flicker of hope for the country”.

Musk's endorsement comes as Germans are set to vote on Feb. 23 after a coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz collapsed.
