Mercedes-Benz Group AG is joining a Geely lawsuit against European Union tariffs on electric cars imported from China, adding to a flurry of legal cases targeting the duties.

Mercedes-Benz has joined its Chinese joint venture partner Geely's legal challenge at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) against EU tariffs on China-made electric vehicles, a company spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Although Tesla is an American company, it builds Model 3s in Shanghai and exports them to Europe. According to The Financial Times, Tesla accounted for approximately 28% of all Chinese-made EVs imported to the EU in 2023.

Chinese EV makers BYD, Geely, and SAIC contested EU's import duties at Court of Justice. Tesla excluded from tariffs, gaining only 7.8% tax.

Chinese electric vehicle makers BYD , Geely and SAIC have challenged the EU's import tariffs at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), filings on the court's website showed on Thursday.

Both BMW and Tesla have been hit with tariffs by the EU on imports of electric vehicles made in China, along with other Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and SAIC.

Tesla and BMW are also taking action over duties imposed after an EU investigation concluded Chinese subsidies were distorting the market.

BMW said in a statement that EU duties on battery electric vehicles “harm business models of globally active companies.”
