As of early Friday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center has given a disturbance located off of the East Coast of the United Stated a 70% chance to develop into a tropical storm or hurricane within the next 2 to 7 days. The area where this disturbance is located is favorable for tropical development due to the lack of wind shear and dry air.

HOUSTON — The third named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season has formed. Chantal is just off the East Coast of the United States. With the 7 a.m. update, Chantal had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and was moving to the north at two miles per hour.
