President Donald Trump gushed about his dreams of expanding America’s borders by taking over Canada while the NATO chief sat silently beside him. “Canada only works as a state,” the president said during his Oval Office meeting with Mark Rutte, the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Both Canada and Greenland, which is included in NATO as the territory of founding member Denmark, were raised during an informal press conference in the Oval Office. In the meeting, Trump also applied new pressure on the trans-Atlantic alliance to spend more on its collective defense.
