Jun 25, 2024 · The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) today elected Alain Berset (Switzerland) as Secretary General of the Council of Europe for a five-year term beginning on 18 September 2024. In the second round of the election, Mr Berset obtained 114 votes, a majority of the votes cast.

Alain Berset became Secretary General of the Council of Europe on 18 September 2024. Prior to that, Mr Berset was an elected Minister in the Swiss government (Federal Council) between 2012 and 2023.

Elected for a five-year term, Mr Berset will represent and lead the Council of Europe, taking on responsibility for its strategic planning, the thrust of its activities and the management of its budget.
