The Honolulu Police Department’s Scientific Investigation Section is the only full-service forensic testing laboratory in Hawaii and is accredited in the areas of Biology, Controlled Substances, Firearms/Toolmarks, and Trace Evidence through the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) to ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

The plan for MPD is to develop a new crime lab facility, moving the forensic team to the department’s forensic facility, as well as hiring one new criminalist to focus on DNA analysis.

The Criminal Investigation Division investigates cases involving murder, robbery, sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, financial fraud and forgery, auto theft, and white collar crimes.

The Hawai‘i Crime Lab (PI: Dr. Ashley Rubin) uses social science to help Hawai‘i’s citizens and policymakers better understand crime and punishment. We strive for objective, non-partisan analyses and insights.

The Honolulu Police Department's Scientific Investigation Section (SIS) is now offering a new, accelerated 3-week training program designed to introduce students to the fast-paced world of contemporary scientific testing in criminal investigations.

Second week of every month: Check the HPD Crime Dashboard to focus on violent crimes in a chosen district. Fourth week of every month: Write a local crime news “roundup” (e.g., the top five crime stories) and put them in context of what we’re finding in the Crime Observatory of O‘ahu.
